The 45th PVI was commanded by a native of Colombia, PA., Col. Thomas Welsh, who is buried in Mt. Bethel Cemetery on Locust Street. Company K
of the 45th was formed in Colombia and recruited at 2nd and Locust Streets. The first commander of Company K, oddly, was a Captain Ezekiel Rambo
who was killed in the first skirmish the company had.
The Regiment early on became a part of Burnsides Nith Corps and remained with them throughout the war. It's battle flag contained the names of
Antietam, South Mountain, Vicksburg, Knoxville, Fredricksburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, The Crater at Petersburg and others.
By the end of the war there were only about 100 or so that could answer the roll call. The men of this regiment did their duty.
